Drones Meeting: Saturday, May 12, 2007
We talked about: Cheating in America. Examples of cheating in life, jobs, and exams. Drones Club quiz administered. You're roped together with a friend while hiking. Your partner falls off a cliff. He's hanging in mid-air suspended by the rope tied around your waist. You're sliding toward the edge of the cliff. The only way to keep from being pulled off and dying with your friend is to cut the rope. Do you cut it?

How do you know that the only way to keep from being pulled off and dying with your friend is to cut the rope? Harry Reid would make that claim, and he would cut the rope well before doom is certain. I'll contend that if I am fool enough to be roped to a friend on a mountain, then neither or both of us will plunge to our deaths.
Well, for purposes of the discussion the assumption was that you'd both die if you didn't cut the rope. You know, one of those bothersome 'values clarification' exercises. It did result in some lively discussion though. Guess what the Grandrone would do...
My guess is that the Grandrone would cut the rope.
The Grandrone is a futilitarian. Would he see cutting the rope as a means to the ultimate end? Possibly. But he has other, higher, obligations here yet to be. I think he would cut the rope.
