Obama is a big wimp. TX and other southern and western states will opt out of Yo-bama's plan's and he'll let them. Afterall, what would the blue states due for an armed force?
Another interesting factoid for you Drones - we already spend more on socialized medicine per head than Canada and the UK.

Is our spending more simply a function of having a much larger population than either of those two places, or is something else at play there that I am not accounting for?

This is spending per person. So it's not because of our larger population. The US government spends about $2800/person. Germany, UK and Canada spends about $2000 per person. Our public health care spending is on Medicare and Medicaid. One could argue that we could copy the Canadian system with existing funds. This of course would mean decreased spending on the poor and elderly. The fact of the matter is that Americans expect more in terms of health care and are willing to pay for it.
