A point.

First the number of illegal immigrants in the USA is about 5% of the total population not 1% as mentioned in last Saturday's Drones.

From the AP:
http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=D8G6U2KO8&show_article=1
"The Pew Hispanic Center used Census Bureau data to estimate that the United States had 11.1 million illegal immigrants in March 2005. The center used monthly population estimates to project a current total of 11.5 million to 12 million. The report estimates that 850,000 illegal immigrants have arrived in United States each year since 2000."

The rate of illegal immigrant now equals the rate of legal immigration
http://www.cis.org/topics/legalimmigration.html
"The United States admits between 700,000 and 900,000 legal immigrants each year. This number does not represent the actual number of people settling here lawfully — rather, it represents the total number of people who were granted permanent residence ("green cards"), half of whom are already living here, some illegally, some legally on temporary visas."

Coupled with the long wait times for people trying to get in legally, why should we reward lawbreakers? Any sovereign nation is allowed to judge who gets in through the gates. This is not a an anti-immigration position. Our failure to guard that gate means the end of nation and the beginning of anarchy.

DUI's
USA Today
http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2007-04-10-hispanic-dui_N.htm#uslPageReturn
According to the University of North Carolina's Highway Safety Research Center, 7.04% of Hispanic drivers involved in crashes in the state in 2005 were suspected of driving while intoxicated. That compares with 2.82% of whites in crashes and 2.29% of African-Americans, according to Eric Rodgman, a researcher at the center.

Crime

National statistics are not available for the incarceration rate for illegal aliens. I think it's because of political correctness. So I'm left to scourer opinion blogs. iSteve is the most reliable of these. He has data for Hispanics in general.

http://www.isteve.com/Crime_Imprisonment_Rates_by_Race.htm
"That's because, according to the NCIA, Hispanics have a 3.7-times-higher rate of imprisonment that non-Hispanic whites"

More on crime using 2004 statistics:

Citing an Urban Institute study, director of research for the Center for Immigration Studies Steven Camorata noted in 2004: "Roughly 17 percent of the prison population at the federal level are illegal aliens. That's a huge number since illegal aliens only account for about 3 percent of the total population."

Welfare Statistics

This website quotes the figures of welfare usage by illegal immigrants using Census Bureau statistics:

http://www.cis.org/articles/2007/welfarerelease.html

50.1% of illegal Mexican immigrants use government assistance mostly in the form of Food Stamps and Medicaid.

That WSJ article fails to mention this as illegals are not allowed to use cash assistance.

2nd and 3rd generations

The Pew Hispanic Center put out of study of the educational accomplishments of 2nd 3rd generation Hispanics.

http://pewhispanic.org/files/reports/22.pdf

Table 4 summarizes,
15% college grads
29% some college
33% HS grads
23% k-12 dropouts

Things don't change much between the 2nd and 3rd generations.

In contrast according to the US Census Bureau, 26% of the US population are college grads.

http://www.census.gov/Press-Release/www/releases/archives/american_community_survey_acs/001802.html

And 11% are k-12 dropouts according to the Department of Education.
